Description
Painted photograph of an anonymous Parsi family by Nusserwanji Studios, Kalbadevi,Mumbai. Originally a sepia tone photograph, it was hand finished by studio artists with spectacular attention to detail, especially the textiles and costumes. Each and every costume has been painted with to depict its unique texture. For eg. one can almost feel the velvet of the sari or the boy's coat. Also noteworthy is the photographer's placement of sitters to achieve symmetry. Bombay's Kalbadevi area was once a hub of artist photographer studios which were popular among patrons during early to mid 20th century.
