K.R Ketkar was was born in 1893 in Padghvali near Alibag, Maharashtra. He studied at the J J School of Art and completed his Diploma in Drawing and Painting in 1915. He further got his Art Masters Diploma in 1916. He won various merits and scholarships during his time at J J School and in 1917 he won the Mayo Medal. He later founded the Ketkar Art Institute which was instrumental in imparting initial training to a number of important artists like M.R Acharekar, J. M. Ahivasi, D. G. Badiger, V. A Mali and K. H. Ara.
