Calcutta Art Studio was established in 1876 by Sri Annada Prasad Bagchi, along with four of his artist students, namely, Nabo Coomar Biswas, Phanibhushan Sen, Krishna Chandra Pal and Jogendranath Mukhopadhyay. The studio was established in 1876 to produce high-quality lithographic prints of religious and mythological subjects for middle-class homes.
This lithograph titled Sita Uddhaar depicts a scene from the Ramayana. After Sita and Rama's exile, Sita was abducted by Ravana and taken to Lanka (Sri Lanka) who tried to win her affection with gifts, but Sita being a dutiful wife remained faithful and was eventually rescued.
